{"id":174,"date":"2016-06-15T15:43:24","date_gmt":"2016-06-15T14:43:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/justbloomingfloralart.philandmel.com\/?p=174"},"modified":"2016-06-15T16:17:06","modified_gmt":"2016-06-15T15:17:06","slug":"an-artist-is-an-explorer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/justbloomingfloralart.philandmel.com\/index.php\/2016\/06\/15\/an-artist-is-an-explorer\/","title":{"rendered":"Artistic Adventure- Exploring a new Structure"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Floral Art structures, constructions and armatures<\/h2>\n<p>In addition to\u00a0containers (vases)\u00a0and stands, in\u00a0Floral Art we\u00a0are able to make many different supports for our flowers and plant material.\u00a0 These are known as Structures, Constructions\u00a0or Armatures and the way they work as part of the design should be artistically integral to the whole, as well as mechanically useful.<\/p>\n<h3>Constructions\/Structures Definition:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Should be composed mainly of natural plant material<\/li>\n<li>May be decorative forms in their own right<\/li>\n<li>May be used as a form of mechanic<\/li>\n<li>May be formed into any shape or size<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In order to push the boundaries and\u00a0grow and develop it is great to challenge yourself by exploring a new construction technique once in a while.<\/p>\n<h2>artistic adventure<\/h2>\n<p>In early April a friend and I worked together on a\u00a0 floral art group exhibit for an education day aimed at giving us experience towards competing on an interclub level later in the year.\u00a0 We were given the title &#8216;Artistic Adventure&#8217; and as usual my mind wildly flew off into interpretation and into pinterest for inspirational images.\u00a0 I soon found myself looking at globes, artist&#8217;s tools, a quote from Henri Matisse and of all adventurous things Hot Air Balloons!\u00a0\u00a0This also\u00a0led on to my thinking about what kind of structure I might need to make and then what construction technique I could attempt in this exhibit.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/justbloomingfloralart.philandmel.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/P1020311.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-177\" src=\"https:\/\/justbloomingfloralart.philandmel.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/P1020311-595x397.jpg\" alt=\"We captioned our exhibit with the quote from Henri Matisse and sat it on a collaged paper palette made out of paint washed images of world travel destinations.\" width=\"595\" height=\"397\" srcset=\"https:\/\/justbloomingfloralart.philandmel.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/P1020311-595x397.jpg 595w, https:\/\/justbloomingfloralart.philandmel.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/P1020311.jpg 675w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 595px) 100vw, 595px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-caption-dd\"><\/div>\n<h2>design inspiration process<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com\/564x\/84\/a7\/cd\/84a7cd31cbd42ed7d3579ec5f832e4b1.jpg\" width=\"307\" height=\"525\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I liked the idea of incorporating a basket of\u00a0 seasonal spring blooms in the exhibit and a hot air balloon has a basket so that was great!\u00a0 But what about the balloon part and how could I use plant materials to achieve this structure?<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com\/564x\/f9\/6e\/27\/f96e278f98c641b58fe1020d0907aed6.jpg\" width=\"299\" height=\"449\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I studied globes and spheres and found this open lamp construction which led me to thinking about using a structure constructed\u00a0perhaps from flexible willow (Salix) canes or\u00a0similar.\u00a0 I hoped\u00a0to construct an open and light structure since the balloon would be at the top of the exhibit.\u00a0 I also liked the idea of using blossoms or flowers to decorate the balloon structure.<\/p>\n<h2><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com\/564x\/25\/61\/85\/256185ccfc1094bf35f07dd310f357d7.jpg\" width=\"331\" height=\"459\" \/><\/h2>\n<h2>construction technique<\/h2>\n<p>I failed to find sufficient flexible willow canes so initially planned to create an open woven sphere\u00a0by <strong>glueing<\/strong>\u00a0wide Midelino canes together.\u00a0 You can see how Christine De Beer makes an amazing construction using this technique here. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.christinedebeer.ca\/tutorials\/midelino-cane-coil-globe-cup\">http:\/\/www.christinedebeer.ca\/tutorials\/midelino-cane-coil-globe-cup<\/a><\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 380px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.christinedebeer.ca\/images\/2013\/01\/continue-to-weave-the-cane-strips-in-a-ball-shape-380x507.jpg\" width=\"380\" height=\"507\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">I would have liked to have used the principle of creating a globe with wide midelino canes like in the image above .<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Instead I was only able to source thin canes so had to work with what I had.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 480px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.afloralaffair.co.nz\/images\/2mm%20500gram%20round%20cane.JPG\" width=\"480\" height=\"621\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">I used 3 thin round canes and bound them together Using Oasis BindWire<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure style=\"width: 437px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/oasisfloralproducts.com\/img_catalog\/hires\/40_02662_HR.jpg\" width=\"437\" height=\"500\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Oasis BindWire<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure style=\"width: 595px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.lynneknowlton.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/wrap-beach-ball.jpg\" width=\"595\" height=\"397\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">I used this wrapping method to shape the sphere, wrapping my bound cane length around a 20&#8243; I didn&#8217;t measure it) I then wrapped it around a 20&#8243; Inflated beach ball securing it at the joints with cable ties.<\/li>\n<li>Then I deflated the beach ball and wired the joints removing the cable ties as I went to achieve a consistent looking sphere.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<div class=\"wp-caption-dd\"><a href=\"https:\/\/justbloomingfloralart.philandmel.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/P1020325.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-180\" src=\"https:\/\/justbloomingfloralart.philandmel.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/P1020325-595x892.jpg\" alt=\"P1020325\" width=\"595\" height=\"892\" srcset=\"https:\/\/justbloomingfloralart.philandmel.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/P1020325-595x892.jpg 595w, https:\/\/justbloomingfloralart.philandmel.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/P1020325.jpg 675w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 595px) 100vw, 595px\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Four dried pampas grass sticks were inserted between the floral foam and the basket.\u00a0\u00a0 These formed the supports to which the cane ball &#8216;balloon&#8217; was tied.\u00a0 We used some wood stain to colour both the pampas grass sticks and the papercovered wire on the sphere. This helped it\u00a0to match the wooden\u00a0easel that also featured in our exhibit.<\/p>\n<p>Individual hyacinth blossoms were threaded onto bullion wire.
